The aim of the class: Practising irregular verbs through the game. Students will be confronted with the racism and its illogical background. They will discover the interesting information about their own name and names of their classmates. They will practise the basic skills of how to form a question. At the end of the lesson the students will get to know proverbs from all around the world and then compare them with the Czech equivalents
1) Warm-up activity: The story of your name
The students will be divided into pairs. Each of the students will receive a piece of paper with the information about the name of his/her neighbour. Their task will be to introduce the name of his/her classmate in front of the whole class. Then they will switch the roles. The teacher may ask the students what was the most interesting information concerning their name. Many names have also many different origins and even though they are frequent in the Czech Republic they may have various countries of origin.
Other possible question:
• Do you know some famous person with your name?
• Would you change your name? If so, what would it be?
• How did you "get" your name? Who named you and why?
• How your name may have had a positive or negative influence in your life?
MARKÉTA: the 26TH most common Czech name- Markyta/ Margaret/ Marjorie/Meggie
2) Irregular quiz: Racism
The students will be divided into the two groups according to the length of their hair. The long hair group is the privileged one and its members are allowed to choose the infinitive form of the verb and they can also correct their answer twice. The shorthair group has neither of these powers and it is up to the teacher to pick the verb for them. The group with the highest score of correct answers wins. Right after this activity comes an evaluation. The teacher may ask the students whether the rules of the game were fair. What they think about the separation of students based on the length of hair and so on. Emphasize that in such a way the racism works in the real world.
3) Guess the nationality
One of the students will be given a piece of paper with a nationality he/she will represent. The rest of the class will have to ask him/her a question in order to find out the country our student comes from. The chosen student is allowed to answer only: YES or NO. Through this activity the students will practise question formation and they will also rack their brains to guess the nationality.
4) Matching activity: Wise saying of English culture
The students will be divided into small groups. The teacher will provide each group with a set of papers consisting of proverbs from English culture and their Czech equivalents. The students will match English proverbs with their Czech translations. The correct pairs will be checked together with the whole class. The teacher may discuss with the students the true meaning of these sayings. The students will discover many similarities between English and Czech proverbs although these nations are quite different.
5) Guess the nationality behind the proverb: Proverbs from various cultures and nations
This activity is purely for an entertainment. The teacher will choose some interesting and outlandish proverbs from various cultures and nations and the students will try to guess which country is behind each saying.
