    1) A Survey (10minutes)

Aim: students relate the topic of migration to their own experience / students can form questions

Source: activity inspired by a teacher of mine

    Teaching aids: worksheets

The teacher greets the class and explains the first activity. Each student gets a worksheet with the following task:

    page4image5256 page4image5416 page4image5576 page4image5736 page4image5896

Get the autograph of someone who...

    ...has ever been to Britain

...has relatives (family members) who emigrated

...was not born in the Czech Republic

...knows somebody who does not come from the Czech Republic

...has a friend who does not come from the Czech Republic

...would like to live in another country for some time

The students should ask each other questions and collect as many autographs from their classmates as they can in a given stretch of time.

Before they start, the teacher revises the formation of questions with the help of the students and writes the beginnings of questions on the board:

    Have you ever been to...?

    Has .... emigrated...?

Do you have....? / Have you got...?

Were you born in...? / Where were you born?

    Do you know...?

    Would you like...?

The teacher gives the students ca. 3 minutes to collect the autographs and then announces the winner/winners.

    2) Discussion about migration - evaluation of the homework (10 minutes)

Aim: students consider the significance of the topic of migration to their own country / students can shortly answer questions about migration

    Teaching aids: worksheets (homework)

The teacher asks the students to take their homework and sit down in a circle. The teacher goes through all the questions and encourages the students to discuss the topic. The teacher calls on the students, so that, if possible, each one of them speaks for a while.

    3) Group work – welcoming immigrants/refugees and giving recommendations (15 minutes)

Aim: students consider possible problems orneeds of new-coming immigrants / students can write a short welcome speech and express recommendations

Source: my own activity inspired by: https://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/article/a-multicultural- society

    Teaching aids: worksheets
The teacher divides the students into 3-4 groups and gives them the following task:

Imagine that a group of refugees who can speak English come to your school to study there. How would you welcome them, so that they would feel good in your school? What recommendations would you give them? (What should they know about your school or the life in your country in general?)

1.Write a short welcome speech for the new comers (3-4sentences). One member of your group will present it at the end of the lesson.

    2. Write a list of at least 3 recommendations for the refugees, which you will give to them at the end of your welcome speech.

(What should the refugees know about our country? What is maybe new to them? What is different here from what they do in their country? What should/shouldn't they do?)

    3. One member of your group will represent a refugee and prepare a few words to thank for the welcome speech.

The teacher assists the students when they need help, writes useful words on the board and guides the students to complete the task.

    4) Presentation of group work – role play (7 minutes)

Aim: students consider possible problems or needs of new-coming immigrants / students can present a short welcome speech and express thanks

    Source: my own activity

The teacher gives instructions and asks the students to present their work. They demonstrate a welcoming event at school – 3-4 chosen students represent the refugees and another 3-4 students deliver the welcoming speeches and hand over the recommendations, after which the “refugees” say their thanks. The rest of the class act like the crowd at the event. (They may clap their hands etc.)

    5) Evaluation (3 minutes)

Aim: students consider possible problems or needs of new-coming immigrants / students can express their feelings and opinions

    Source: my own activity

The teacher praises the students and asks them following questions:

How did you feel as a refugee / the speaker?
Can you imagine going to live in another country? What is difficult about it?
